Naruto Uzumaki

Who is Naruto Uzumaki?

Naruto Uzumaki (うずまきナルト, Uzumaki Naruto) is the main protagonist of the manga and anime series Naruto and Naruto Shippūden. He is also a participant in the manga and anime Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, sequel to the original work of Masashi Kishimoto. He is a resident of Konohagakure, son of the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze and his wife Kushina Uzumaki, as well as being the current reincarnation of Asura Ōtsutsuki.

He was a member of Team Kakashi alongside Sakura Haruno and Sasuke Uchiha. He is currently the Seventh Hokage (七代目火影, Nanadaime Hokage; meaning “Seventh Shadow of Fire”) of Konoha, fulfilling his dream, as well as the husband of Hinata Hyūga and father of Boruto Uzumaki and Himawari Uzumaki.

Appearance

Naruto, as established by Jiraiya, has a great resemblance to his father, inheriting his blue eyes and spiky blond hair, likewise, from his mother he inherited the shape of his eyes and face. Naruto’s most important and outstanding physical characteristics are the three whisker marks on both cheeks. In addition, the most regularly mentioned trait before Part Two was his short stature for his age. After two years, Naruto had a growth spurt, eventually surpassing Sakura in size. By the end of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Naruto’s height had grown to nearly catch up to his father, and two years later, he was the tallest of his generation. During the epilogue, Naruto’s height increased to such an extent that he surpassed his wife Hinata by a full head, making him one of the tallest of his generation.

During his childhood, Naruto used a multitude of shirts that varied their colors, passing through white, green or black, which had an Uzumaki or fire symbol on the front, plus he wore shorts. He also used to wear green goggles on his forehead that had his name written on them, however, over time, he stopped using them and replaced them with his sash.

During Part One, Naruto’s outfit consisted of an orange tracksuit with blue on the shoulder area and around the waist, a white swirl with a tassel on the left side and the Uzumaki Clan symbol on the back, he had a white turtleneck, orange pants with a small bag to keep his weapons attached to his right leg, the typical blue shinobi sandals and a blue forehead protector. Underneath his tracksuit, Naruto usually wears a black T-shirt, however, on some occasions, he wore armor underneath it.

During Part 2, Naruto’s outfit underwent modifications, due to his original clothes being torn apart during training with Jiraiya. The outfit retains the orange color, as well as the white except that it no longer had the tassel, plus swirls of red, however, the tracksuit is much tighter replacing the blue color with black, this extends through the neck, shoulders and sleeves. The metallic part of his ninja Band had been moved to a long black bandana, he also changed his blue shinobi sandals for black ones. On some occasions, Naruto was seen wearing a military green T-shirt with the fire symbol and white pants, this on casual days or when there is no mission.

In his battle against Pain, Naruto briefly wore a short red cape with the black flame design on the edges and carried the Shadow Clone Summoning Scroll hanging on his back, however, the cape was destroyed when he entered his Version Two. Because he encountered Hagoromo, Naruto obtained the mark of a white sun on his right palm, which disappeared when Kaguya was sealed. Later, after his final battle with Sasuke, due to the Rasengan’s clash with the Chidori, Naruto lost his right arm, but some time after the end of the war, Tsunade built him a prosthetic arm made from Hashirama cells and completely wrapped in bandages; this arm is an arm exactly like his real one, but he leaves the bandages on because he considers it the symbol of his bond with Sasuke.[14] Naruto’s right arm is a symbol of the bond he has with Sasuke.

Two years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, Naruto has grown noticeably taller and his facial features have developed. He has very short hair and has moved the metal part of his ninja sash to a simple black band. He wears a black uniform-style jacket with an orange zipper and which has several buttons at the waist and sleeves, allowing him to fold down the left sleeve and back flaps, giving him easy access to the weapon pouches on the back of his belt. He also wears a red band with the Uzumaki symbol on his left arm. Being on his days off, Naruto wears an orange sweatshirt and black pants with sandals.

He initially wore a blue striped scarf that had been knitted by his mother, however, he stopped wearing it when he learned that Hinata knitted a red scarf for him. When he and Hinata married, Naruto wore a traditional black wedding kimono. Several years later, as the Seventh Hokage, Naruto stopped wearing his ninja band. His attire consists of an orange sweatshirt with black stripes, along with black pants and shinobi sandals. Along with the typical Hokage hat, Naruto also begins wearing a white cloak decorated with flames on the edges and vertically inscribed with the words “Seventh Hokage” (七代目火影, Nanadaime Hokage) and closed in the front by a thin red rope.

Personality

Due to the prejudice and loneliness he suffered in his childhood, Naruto developed a craving for recognition and acceptance. To achieve this, Naruto used to play pranks all over the village and claimed that he would one day obtain the title of Hokage. Although after he became more connected to other people, his reasons for wanting to become Hokage underwent a change: they have less to do with the desire for recognition, and more to do with wanting to protect his home and the people close to him. Despite the coldness with which he was treated in his childhood, he grew up to become a great ninja, just as his parents wished. Many characters and even distinctive and respected people admire and encourage his dream of becoming Hokage. As stated by Tobi and many others, Naruto is a firm believer of the Will of Fire.

Naruto’s exuberant personality and burning desire to excel strongly impact the lives of those around him. Early in the series, Naruto befriended Konohamaru Sarutobi, the grandson of the Third Hokage, and it is through his brief tutelage that Konohamaru understood that the path to success is through hard work. Kakashi Hatake has described this as “Naruto’s unique power”, the how it seems to change the worldview of everyone he meets. With this power, Naruto was able to redeem Zabuza Momochi and Neji Hyūga, and instill courage in Inari, Sakura Haruno, Hinata Hyūga and Tsunade. Also of changing Gaara from a ruthless killer to one of his closest friends, and even gaining the trust ofNagato, the apparent leader ofAkatsuki and who was one of the main antagonists of the series. Naruto believes that only he could save Sasuke Uchiha from darkness, ultimately succeeding.

As mentioned above, Naruto is characterized by being hyperactive, is often exuberant, easily excitable, impulsive, and suffers from a short attention span. He is always surrounded by comical situations, and he is bent on bringing a smile (or sometimes also a laugh) to whoever is in a critical situation, making jokes at the least indicated moments. Sometimes he would be seen arguing and fighting with his clones, something silly in itself, as he would be arguing and beating himself up. This is supported by Asuma Sarutobi in the Twelve Ninja Guardians saga, as he describes Naruto as the type of person who doesn’t think before he acts. While raw power is one of his strengths, Naruto has begun to learn that patience with focus is something he needs in order for him to become truly effective.

According to Kakashi, Naruto is someone who learns through his body. Naruto is relatively naive, is slow to understand the principles of a jutsu and often requires a brutalizing down of an already simplified analogy in order to understand what was explained to him. This assumes that he is able to hold his attention long enough, as he usually seeks to change the subject in the wake of his ignorance, insisting that he has already grasped the concept that was explained to him. Although he maintains this self-confidence by loudly proclaiming that he will master whatever technique he is learning in a certain fraction of time, Naruto will not hesitate to ask for help if he needs it.

As an extension of his naivety and nobility, Naruto has a number of childlike traits. His pajamas always include a black comic cup with eyes and teeth, and he keeps his money in a frog purse he affectionately calls “Gama-chan.” He is also very impetuous and rarely pays attention to formality or social status. He eats almost exclusively ramen, and is a regular customer at the Ichiraku Ramen bar even his hobby is eating different types of ramen and sorting them out. He has only denied himself ramen on one occasion: when he was stricken with grief over Jiraiya’s death. He has a natural affinity for perverted jutsu, something that tends to be reprimanded by Sakura as well as Iruka, and which he only brought to new levels after the meeting with Jiraiya. He also smiles most of the time, as during his childhood, it was to hide the sadness of his lonely life. Those closest to him are able to recognize when his smile is not genuine. Naruto also inherited his catchphrase “Dattebayo!” (だって ば よ!) from his mother, Kushina Uzumaki, who says “ttebane” (“(だ) って ばね”) when she is excited or frustrated.

However, when the situation calls for it or when a loved one is in trouble, Naruto immediately comes to their aid. This is most commonly seen in the series through his interactions with his teammates, Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno. With Sasuke, Naruto sees him as a brother, already throughout Part II he goes out of his way to bring him back to Konohagakure, despite his at-will defection from the village. With Sakura, Naruto had long been in love with her, and will do everything he can to make her happy, even if it comes at the cost of his own happiness. Sai has indicated that this dedication has progressed to the point of love. Sai also takes note that the strain of making Sakura happy and bringing Sasuke home are the source of Naruto’s inner pain.

After the loss of his mentor Jiraiya, talking to his own father, and talking to Jiraiya’s assassin and former student Nagato, Naruto came to understand the negative side of revenge, and wanted to save Sasuke from it even more. Naruto also tried to stop the Raikage from exacting his revenge on Sasuke, because this would create a cycle of hatred. Apparently, Naruto was becoming more and more desperate in his quest to save Sasuke, as he was willing to get down on his knees before the Raikage and ask for forgiveness for Sasuke’s crimes and even take physical abuse on selling her out. Moreover, after learning from Madara Uchiha the reason for Sasuke’s hatred, Naruto decided and proclaimed to Sakura, who was trying to get him to abandon his quest, that he really understood Sasuke now and wanted to save him not only because of the promise he made to Sakura, but also from himself. However, after realizing that the rest of his companions aimed to kill Sasuke, and that no one in the village would ever accept him back, Naruto apparently suffered from hyperventilation due to the extreme conflict that has been presented.

At last the reunion with Sasuke, Naruto sympathized with the criminal in his actions, and refused to back down or kill him, instead he found a third solution. Naruto came to the conclusion that the two were indeed destined to fight, as Madara had predicted, and that when this happens, both Naruto and Sasuke were going to die. Naruto is fully willing to take on Sasuke’s burden, as a friend. In a way, Naruto is the only one who has not given up hope on Sasuke. However, Naruto does not give up on bringing Sasuke back as a citizen of the village, but believing that words would no longer have any effect in allowing them to understand each other so it is up to him to fight.

Naruto has shown that he loves his parents deeply. When he met his father, despite being angry at Minato for sealing the Nine-Tails inside him, Naruto soon overcame his anger and was very happy and proud to be the son of the Fourth Hokage. Also in tears, he embraced his mother Kushina when he met her. After learning how his parents met and what happened during the Nine-Tails Attack on Konohagakure, Naruto told his mother that he could finally understand what a parent’s love was like and also said that he didn’t blame Minato for what he did, he was actually glad to be his son. When the Fourth Raikage was criticizing Minato since he was the supposed “Prophecy Boy” who died at the hands of the Nine-Tails, Naruto after remembering what Kushina had told him about what his father did he told the Raikage that the Fourth Hokage had not failed at all.

According to Killer B, Naruto’s and his true strength comes from a special place which are represented as suns (they are the things we don’t want to lose and cling to them), but in Naruto’s case they are two suns which are his parents, even though they died after he was born, Naruto said that before they died they left him many things among them the work of being the Savior.

Unlike most others, Naruto has shown great care when it comes to the Tailed Beasts and theirs in his care. Having seen the dynamic relationship between the Bee and the Eight-Tailed, he has confessed to Son Gokū that he is even jealous of the latter and wishes he had an equal relationship with Kurama. His words, which at times, surprised the tailed beasts who are used to being mistreated and locked up, regardless of people’s intentions. Recently, the relationship between Naruto and the Nine-Tails has changed, while the beast seems to have become more open to Naruto, while remaining insistent that he is the lesser of two baddies, and Naruto has stated that he recognizes the beast not as a monster but as a companion. And so much is his commitment to helping the beasts that even all the tailed beasts and their jinchūrikis entrusted their dreams and hopes to him, coming to the conclusion that it is the right path that the Sage of the Six Paths spoke of.

Since the beginning of the Fourth Great Shinobi World War, and by extension, the Pain Invasion, Naruto had often thought that it was his “duty” and “burden” to stop the pain and hatred, and that he must take it upon himself. However, Itachi Uchiha pointed out to Naruto that this line of thinking, coupled with his growing power, would only make him arrogant. He even went so far as to suggest that Naruto might someday become like Madara should he forget about his friends.

After exposing Tobi’s identity as Obito Uchiha and expressing his disapproval of his dark outlook on life, Naruto declares to Obito that he was not going to let him kill any of his teammates and friends. As a result, Obito resolved to put the “chosen one” and the Alliance in the same despair he experienced, namely by killing one of Naruto’s friends, Neji Hyūga. This, along with Obito’s “reality” and his beliefs, sent the young shinobi into a period of mental turmoil. Soon after, Naruto tells Kakashi and his companions that he clearly understands that a true shinobi is destined to endure, believing that if remembering his fallen friends was a curse, he would gladly take on that burden forever. This shows that Naruto’s will still surpasses the impossible, and that unlike Obito, he wants to maintain the bonds he made with his friends. After the time jump, Naruto is seen to have developed a strong maturity in his personality being now much more responsible for the position he now holds and it is unknown at the moment if he retains some of his childish personality traits and even became objective enough to disqualify his son for cheating in the Chūnin Exams.

Although he eventually achieved his dream of becoming Hokage, his responsibilities would often overwhelm Naruto, depriving him of spending time with his family] He admits that part of this stems from not growing up with a father, making him unsure of how to properly interact with his children. However, Naruto manages by creating shadow clones to tend to them while he is busy, protects them from danger, spends time with them when he can, and expresses pride in his children’s accomplishments.

He adopted Hiruzen Sarutobi’s philosophy that everyone in the village is his family, believing that genuine relationships are formed by love rather than biological blood relations.

Story

Childhood

Naruto is the son of Minato Namikaze, the Fourth Hokage and Kushina Uzumaki and was born in the Leaf Village.

On the night of his birth, a masked man summoned the Nine-Tailed Demon, who, under his illusory command, attacked the Leaf Village. On that occasion, Minato and Kushina sacrificed their lives to save him and sealed the fox inside the newborn Naruto. Because of this, Naruto grows up being shunned by the villagers while the only person who shows him affection is Iruka Umino, his master at the Academy. After failing again in the exams to become Genin, Naruto is tricked by Mizuki and steals the scroll of the First Hokage. When Mizuki attempts to kill Iruka, Naruto intervenes and saves his master with the newly learned Superior Body Multiplication Technique. Through this action, Naruto is finally promoted to Genin.

Part.1

After being promoted Genin, Naruto joins Team 7, led by Kakashi, along with Sasuke and Sakura. After seven D-rated missions, Team 7 is given the opportunity to tackle a C-level Mission: protecting a bridge builder, Tazuna. An attack by unknown ninjas precipitates the situation, bringing the mission to a higher danger level, a B.

Team 7 is forced to face the extremely powerful Fog Village ninja Zabuza Momochi, sent by Gato to kill Tazuna. Kakashi, using the power of the Sharingan, manages to overpower Zabuza, coming up behind him and thus, the battle against Zabuza continues. Naruto pledges to no longer be afraid of battles and is determined to prove to Sasuke that he is not a coward. Kakashi, after an initial moment in which he was victorious, is imprisoned by Zabuza in the Water Prison Technique. After a few moments of fear, Naruto and Sasuke devise a tactic to try to free their master. Kakashi emerges from Zabuza’s Water Prison thanks to Naruto and Sasuke’s combined strategy, and the battle continues. Kakashi, thanks to the Sharingan, begins to copy all of Zabuza’s movements, even predicting a technique that he had not yet used, putting him precisely in a corner and in complete agitation. At this point, a mysterious young boy appears and kills Zabuza.

After the battle against Zabuza, Team 7 continues its mission to protect the bridge builder Tazuna. Master Kakashi is in the process of healing from the abuse of the Sharingan: meanwhile, the team members, begin training to better control Chakra in preparation for future battles, as they sense that Zabuza is still alive. In fact, the little boy Haku’s was a set-up and turned out to be, in truth, a faithful helper of the enemy.

Meanwhile, Team 7 learns the story of Kaiza, a local hero, and Inari, his son: Kaiza was considered a hero by everyone until Gato’s men beat him up, crucified him, and killed him in front of all the villagers; because of this, little Inari no longer believes in heroes.

Naruto and Sasuke finally manage to control Chakra perfectly by being able to climb the highest treetops. While training, Naruto encounters Haku without his mask, so he does not recognize him and friendly chats with him. Gato’s henchmen are about to kidnap Tsunami and kill Inari, and meanwhile Team 7 (except Naruto) begins to fight against Zabuza and Haku, who has set a trap for them. Haku reveals his innate Ice Art skill to Sasuke. The battle between Team 7 and the Zabusa/Haku duo intensifies. Gatoo’s henchmen kidnap Tazuna’s daughter, but thanks to Naruto and Inari, she is rescued. Sasuke, meanwhile, is injured by Haku’s devilish mirrors, at which point Naruto intervenes.

Naruto finally rejoins Team 7 behaving, however, recklessly; he is trapped in Haku’s mirrors along with Sasuke. Zabuza’s young assistant explains that his dream is to protect and secure his comrade’s dreams and then asks his enemies not to blame him. Kakashi escalates his fight against Zabuza, the latter now fully aware of the Sharingan’s hypnosis and prescience abilities, and thanks to the Fog Veil Technique and the Silent Murder Technique, he manages to corner Kakashi. Meanwhile, thanks to Naruto’s superior multiplication, Sasuke is able to slowly detect Haku’s movements in the devilish mirrors.

As Kakashi is wounded by Zabuza’s sword to defend Tazuna and Sakura, the battle between Naruto and Sasuke against Haku continues, who proves too fast for his opponents. Naruto struggles and is left without chakra, but collapses to the ground unconscious. Finally, that leaves Sasuke struggling and cornered, and thus, he finally releases his innate ability: the Sharingan. Sasuke, by now, can sense the movements of Haku who decides to kill Naruto, but Sasuke using his body parries the skewers. Naruto watches in horror as Sasuke collapses lifeless on the ground and in anger unleashes unheard-of power: the spirit of the Nine-Tails Fox.

The Tailed Beast’s power heals all of Naruto’s wounds and attacks Haku, succeeding in breaking all the devilish mirrors. With one punch he completely knocks Haku out, breaking his mask. Haku reveals to Naruto why he became Zabuza’s right-hand man. Meanwhile, Kakashi and Zabuza continue their battle to the death. Haku begs Naruto to kill him, as the only way to stop him.

However, when Naruto goes to give him the killing blow, Haku escapes from the fight, sacrificing himself to save Zabuza who was about to be killed by Kakashi. Zabuza in order to strike Kakashi, is willing to go through the body of the now-dead Haku, but Kakashi cleverly manages to jump back and prepares to launch the final attack after pinning his arms. Meanwhile, Inari tries to convince the villagers to rebel against Gato. Gato arrives on the scene to kill everyone, but the villagers spurred on by Inari prepare to fight him.Meanwhile, Zabuza, rebuked by Naruto who resents his indifference to his partner, understands the genuineness of the bond that existed between him and Haku, demonstrating his pain, and decides to carry out his final mission: to kill Gato. Once done, he slumps to the ground, asking to be allowed to die alongside Haku. After the burial of the two opposing shinobi, the team leaves the village, and Tazuna decides to call the bridge Naruto

Returning to the village, Naruto participates with his team in the Chunin Selection Examinations, where he first faces Orochimaru, being defeated, then, in the elimination rounds, faces and defeats Kiba Inuzuka, In this saga, Naruto receives lessons for the first time from the Toad Hermit, Jiraiya, whom Naruto meets by chance at the hot springs while engaged in training with Ebisu. It is precisely because of the improvements made through Jiraiya’s training that Naruto manages to defeat Neji Hyuga, one of the strongest genins in the exam, in the third test. Subsequently, he saves Sasuke and Sakura from Gaara, also managing to change the latter’s personality. After the invasion of the Leaf Village, Naruto sets off with Jiraiya in search of Tsunade to appoint her as the Fifth Hokage.

During the journey, Naruto is attacked by Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki, members of the Dawn Organization, who intend to capture him in order to take possession of his seeker. On this occasion, Naruto is rescued by Jiraiya, who puts the two traitorous ninjas to flight. Continuing on his journey, Naruto learns how to use the Rasengan and, after finding Tsunade, confronts Orochimaru and Kabuto Yakushi, who are also searching for the woman; on the very occasion of this confrontation, the young boy manages to save Tsunade and hit Kabuto with a Rasengan. It is precisely Naruto’s willpower that finally convinces Tsunade to return to the village where, shortly thereafter, she will be named Fifth Hokage. When Sasuke attempts to escape from the Leaf Village, Naruto joins a team with the goal of stopping him. Naruto and Sasuke eventually clash in the Valley of the End (or the Valley of the Epilogue, in the Italian edition), and although the two were equal, Sasuke eventually gets the upper hand, harnessing the power of the second level of the Cursed Sign, obtained thanks to Orochimaru. The two part ways, but Naruto does not give up and never gives up on the idea of bringing his friend back. Not surprisingly, he leaves the village together with Jiraiya to go through a long two-and-a-half-year training so that he will be ready for his next encounter with Sasuke Uchiha.

Part. Two

Kazekage Rescue Mission

Naruto discovers that he is left the only Genin in his age group, so Kakashi proposes the bell test to him and Sakura again. Having begun the bell test, Naruto and Sakura show that they have improved greatly in strength, technique, and, most importantly, cunning: Sakura, who after training with Tsunade has managed to develop superhuman strength, is capable of demolishing entire mountains. Naruto and Sakura, exploiting Kakashi’s passion for Jiraiya’s book “Heavenly Tactics,” manage to take away their former master’s bells and win the challenge.

Tsunade, after receiving the message for help from the Sand Village, immediately sends Team Kakashi on a mission to help them. Team Kakashi is joined by Temari, who was met on the way to the Sand Village. Naruto, on the way, reveals to the other members of the team that he is the carrying force of the Nine-Tails Fox.

Meanwhile, while Sakura and Chiyo fight against Sasori, Naruto and Kakashi pursue Deidara and are now ready for the fight. Kakashi reuses his Hypnotic Sharingan, which is able to suck Deidara into another dimension. However, he only succeeds in detaching part of his arm. Kakashi makes another attempt, however, Deidara manages to escape by heading toward some trees.

Naruto, shortly thereafter, attacks him, managing to knock him off the clay bird and continues to confront him, but after delivering the final blow, he discovers that he has been fighting against a copy. Naruto’s anger increases and the Fox chakra begins to clear from his body. As Naruto begins to lose control, overwhelmed, Kakashi, using a seal he received from Jiraiya, suppresses his chakra, preventing the worst.

Thanks to Neji’s Byakugan, Team Gai finds Deidara who had been hiding. Unable to fight, Deidara eats a clay fragment, concentrates all her chakra and detonates one of her clones, creating a huge explosion, which, however, is stopped in time by Kakashi, moving her to another dimension again with her enhanced Sharingan.

Sakura later ascertains Gaara’s death; Naruto, then, blames Chiyo and accuses her of causing Gaara much suffering by sealing the Monocoda in him. Chiyo, therefore, chooses to die in order to bring Gaara back to life. Returned to life, Gaara is greeted with joy by the entire population of the Sand Village. Every honor is also reserved for the return of Chiyo’s body. The Leaf ninjas then depart again for home. Meanwhile, Danzo gives new instructions to Sai ordering him to join Team Kakashi to replace Sasuke.

Hidan and Kakuzu Arc

Team Kakashi and Team Gai return to Konoha. As Kakashi is taken to the hospital, Sakura tells Tsunade what Sasori told her before she died. Four days have already passed and Naruto and Sakura, with six days remaining to get to Tenchi Bridge, prepare to organize a team to go to the meeting.

Homura Mitokado and Koharu Utatane, worried that Naruto’s Nine-Tails Fox might fall into the hands of the Dawn, challenge Tsunade’s idea of sending Naruto on missions outside the village by intimating that she should limit her range. Tsunade rejects the proposal and promises that she will protect the Leaf with her own life if Naruto is captured because of her. However, in order to allow Naruto to get out, she is forced to compromise with Danzo by agreeing to add Sai to Team Kakashi; Tsunade entrusts the leadership of the team to a member of the ANBU unit, Yamato, who is also asked to control Sai. Finally, Naruto and Sakura meet the two new members of their team, much to Sai’s annoyance because of his sarcastic comments toward the two of them. Later, Naruto, Sakura, Sai, and Yamato leave the Village to capture the Dawn’s infiltrated spy in Orochimaru’s lair.

Kabuto reappears, to whom Sakura reveals that Sasori is dead and how they learned of their rendezvous at the Tenchi Bridge. Meanwhile, Naruto accumulates a large amount of chakra, which he then ingests to hurl a blow of incredible power from which Orochimaru defends himself by summoning three Rashomon gates in front of him. The gates are, however, destroyed by the blow, but Orochimaru still manages to strike Naruto with his Kusanagi Sword.

Naruto is thrown to the other side of the bridge, but sustains no damage. Sakura is startled at the sight of Naruto in that state and, thinking back to when he promised to save Sasuke, runs to him begging him to stop, but Naruto hits her. Strangely, Kabuto treats the girl’s wound, confessing that he considers them to be allies in eliminating Dawn. Yamato manages to stop Naruto through a First Hokage technique. Meanwhile, Sai approaches Orochimaru and tells him that he is not his enemy and that he has a message for him from Danzo, but Orochimaru hits him. Yamato succeeds in suppressing the Fox’s chakra and Sakura heals Naruto.

Naruto, Sakura and Yamato set off in pursuit of Sai. Kabuto sets a trap to try to throw off Yamato’s copy. The latter, however, notices the deception and warns the group that he had stopped to allow Sakura to rest and heal the wounds inflicted by the Fox chakra. During the stop, Yamato pulls Naruto aside and confesses to him that he was the one who injured her.

The three discover that Sai’s real goal is to assassinate Sasuke. Sai finds Sasuke and, after telling him that she plans to take him back to the village, tries to capture him, but the latter breaks free causing an explosion. The noise attracts Yamato, Naruto, and Sakura, who see their friend again after three years. Sasuke reveals that he is willing to do anything to get revenge, even sacrificing himself to Orochimaru several times. Now annoyed, he attempts to use a new technique to defeat Naruto’s team, but is stopped by Orochimaru and Kabuto, who see in the Leaf an ally for the fight against Alba and, thus, the three leave, leaving Naruto disappointed. Once they return to the village, Yamato makes Tsunade aware of Danzo’s plans, and Sai asks the latter if he can remain on Team Kakashi.

Two Saviors arc

After learning of Orochimaru’s death, Naruto resumes his search for Sasuke together with his companions and Team 8. Along the way, the young man also encounters Itachi from whom, despite the brief encounter, he receives a mysterious gift, namely an Itachi Raven that has been transplanted with the left eye of Shisui Uchiha, whose Hypnotic Sharingan can activate the Kotoamatsukami technique, a powerful illusory art capable of manipulating the target without the latter noticing. Just before arriving at his friend’s, Naruto and the rest of the group are stopped by Tobi and thus are unable to find the Uchiha.

After learning that Jiraiya has been killed at the hands of the head of the Dawn organization, Pain, Naruto trains on Mount Myoboku by learning the Toad Hermetic Mode, which makes him so strong that he faces all six bodies of his master’s killer, although during the confrontation he risks losing several times, almost coming close to freeing the Fox but being stopped in time by the Fourth Hokage, his father.

The Leaf Village has been razed to the ground, but the inhabitants, thanks to the help of the Hokage and Katsuyu, survive. Naruto, along with the toads Shima, Fukasaku, Gamabunta, Gamaken, and Gamahiro, begins his confrontation with Pain’s six ways, destroying the World of Asuras and penetrating the World of Preta.

Angered to discover that Pain was also a student of Jiraiya, the Leaf ninja unleashes his new technique, the improved version of the Rasenshuriken. Naruto continues his battle against Pain, managing to defeat several of his opponent’s bodies. When the sage mode reaches its limit, Pain attempts to take control of the fight, but Naruto summons a copy from Mount Myoboku and manages to return to sage mode.

The boy lands the Preta World and defeats the Naraka World, but before he can attack the Deva World as well, it repels him with a Shinra Tensei. Naruto realizes that he cannot use either martial arts or magical arts on the remaining bodies and must, therefore, resort to the illusory arts of the sage toads Shima and Fukasaku.

While Inoichi Yamanaka and the others search for Pain’s real body, Naruto attempts to fend off attacks from the remaining bodies. The Preta World manages to absorb natural energy from the boy and, unable to control it, he turns into a toad and remains petrified. At that moment, the Divine World kills Fukasaku before he can complete the illusory technique he was preparing together with Shima and pins Naruto to the ground. Pain explains to Naruto his conception of peace and his reasons for capturing the seekers. Hinata Hyuga, who is observing the fight with his Byakugan, shows some concern.

Hinata brings back memories of her childhood and meeting Naruto and decides to intervene in the confrontation between the Dawn leader and the carrier force. Naruto instructs her to run away, but the girl stays and confesses to him her long-held love. The girl tries to free him from his chains so that he can defeat Pain, but Naruto, seeing Pain severely injure Hinata in front of his eyes, releases the power of the Nine-Tails Fox.

Naruto unleashes the Fox’s power, first manifesting four tails and then six. The sealing technique contained in the First Hokage’s pendant is then activated, but the Fox manages to break it and destroy the pendant. Pain creates a small suspended satellite with his Chibaku Tensei and traps Naruto, who releases two more tails to free himself, reaching eight. Subdued by the Fox, Naruto is about to remove the Octagonal Seal inside his subconscious to gain all the demon’s power and free him when the Fourth Hokage intervenes to stop him.

Minato’s spirit reveals to Naruto that he is his father and that he sealed half of the Novecode’s chakra inside the boy sixteen years earlier, when the Fox attacked the village on Tobi’s orders. After reactivating Naruto’s seal, the Hokage bids farewell to his son by placing his trust in him. Having regained control, Naruto confronts the Deva World and succeeds in discovering, through sage mode, Nagato’s location. Distracting him with the Superior Technique of Body Multiplication, the Leaf ninja manages to hit Pain’s last body, during Shinra Tensei’s latency phase, with the Rasengan.

Having defeated Pain’s last body, Naruto heads to the location of Nagato. Having finished his tale, Nagato asks Naruto what his intentions are. The Leaf ninja states that he believes in his master’s teachings and wants to spare Nagato. He also quotes a sentence from their master’s first book, and Nagato recalls the circumstances under which he himself inspired Jiraiya to write it. Recalling that his name comes from that of the book’s protagonist, Naruto explains that he, too, has suffered in the past like Nagato. The latter, convinced by the boy, sets out to use the Outer World Transmigration Technique. Nagato brings back to life all those who had been killed during the attack and, in doing so, depletes his chakra and dies. After recovering the bodies of Nagato and Yahiko, Konan leaves the village pinning his hopes on Naruto. After erecting a small monument to his master’s memory, Naruto returns to the Leaf where, after years of suffering and isolation, he is celebrated as a hero by all the villagers.

Five Kage Summit Arc

Naruto discovers, through the mouths of two Cloud ninjas, that Sasuke has joined the Dawn Organization and has apparently captured the Octave Demon’s carrier force. Naruto heads to the Kage summit to convince the Raikage to withdraw Sasuke’s death penalty, but the attempt proves futile. Naruto is later joined by Tobi, who tells him the truth about the extermination of the Uchiha Clan. Later meeting Sasuke, who had just eliminated Danzo Shimura, Naruto promises him that he will confront him once and for all.

Paradise on the Ship Arc

Following Tobi’s proclamation of war, Naruto is sent to a secret turtle-island, which has the ability to move around the seas of the Land of Lightning, under the guise of carrying out a very important S-level mission. In reality, the real purpose of the Kage is to hide the Carrier Force from the Dawn Organization. Along with Naruto, Killer Bee, Carrier Force of the Eight-Tails Ox, is also hidden, who decides to teach him how to control the Fox chakra. At the same time, Naruto discovers the secret of his birth and the truth about the Nine-Tailed Fox’s attack on the Leaf Village. The training is abruptly interrupted when, now obvious, Naruto discovers through Iruka that a war is being fought to protect the Seekers, Tobi’s targets.

This discovery convinces Naruto to leave the island on which he was training to help his comrades fight in the war, and Bee is persuaded to follow him. Subsequently, the two Carrier Forces manage to convince the Fifth Hokage and the Fourth Raikage to let them participate in the war. In this way, both Naruto and Bee reach the various battlefields where they face the various enemies (including Nagato, Itachi, and the White Zetsu) and Tobi. The latter has acquired the Rinnegan, forming his own version of the Six Ways of Pain: for this he has used captured carrier forces that will be under his control and will put Naruto and Bee to the test. But Naruto, now in trouble despite the intervention of Kakashi and Gai, manages to be accepted by the Nine-Tails Fox, thus gaining the ability to use the full power of the seeker.

Fourth Great Ninja War arc

Naruto joins his comrades on the battlefield. The alliance is preparing to attack the Decacoda, but the Decacoda surprisingly breaks free and repels the attack, beginning to complete its transformation. As Naruto, thanks to Sakura, Hinata, and the others, recovers from his injuries, the Octave explains to Bee that the Decacoda is returning to its original form and that they must stop it immediately.

Shikamaru coordinates the counteroffensive to the Decacoda’s Teriosphere, while Kakashi decides to fight with Obito Uchiha to awaken his old “self.” The Fourth Hokage teleports the Teriosphere away, in turn joined by the other three. Soon after, Sasuke arrives, eager to want to protect the village and become Hokage; he and Naruto, following the directives of the First Hokage, then prepare to attack the Decacoda, along with Naruto and all their comrades.

After the mighty barrier erected by the Hokage blocks the Decacoda Teriosphere, Hashirama creates openings in it so that the alliance ninjas can attack the beast. Sakura, remembering the past events of Team 7 and how she had always relied on Naruto and Sasuke rather than herself, reaches maximum power, activating the same seal as Tsunade’s Rebirth Byakugo. The girl thus descends to the front line to lead the attack with her devastating power, flanked by Sasuke and Naruto. Sai reports to Naruto the difficulties of fighting without Kurama’s chakra; he, Sasuke, and Sakura call out Gamakichi, Aoda, and Katsuyu, respectively. Sakura makes Katsuyu separate and sends each of his parts to heal the alliance ninjas with his chakra while Naruto and Sasuke, thanks to Gamakichi and Aoda, manage to reach the Decacoda and strike him by combining the Rasen Shuriken with the Art of Flame.

Madara again summons the Decacoda, which assumes its final form, namely that of the Divine Tree and absorbs the chakra of all those it imprisons into its roots. Madara explains to Hashirama that long ago humans had no chakra; the first to possess any was a princess named Kaguya Otsusuki, who fed on the fruit of the tree.

Her son the Sage of Six Paths was the one who defeated the Decacoda, the Tree itself taking this form to take back its chakra. The Decacoda also captures Naruto, who is rescued by the Third Hokage, and subsequently Obito initiates the Infinite Tsukuyomi, which will be activated when the tree bud has opened and the moon reflects the beast’s eye. The spiraling White Zetsu drives a statue created with the Art of Wood against the alliance and which only the Third Hokage can cope with; at this point Gaara and Naruto arrive and the Kazekage asks Sakura to save him. Sakura and Karin, however, realize that both he and Sasuke are close to death.

While in a state between life and death, Sasuke encounters in his mind the Sage of Six Paths (who is simultaneously talking to Naruto in his mind) with whom he has a conversation in which he explains many things including the origin of chakra and ninja arts, his sons (Indra and Ashura) and the eternal war between them but most relevantly, he tells him that he is the reincarnation of Indra, the eldest son, while Naruto is the reincarnation of Ashura.

Gaara and Kakashi attempt one last attack, but Madara stops them with great ease; arriving in front of him, Obito pierces him and begins extracting the Hermit’s chakra and retrieving the seekers, then claiming that he is still the Obito Uchiha who wanted to become Hokage. At this point, with the Kamui, he transports Sakura and Naruto to the dimension of the ocular technique and finds himself with Kakashi fighting Madara, which makes him relive the first moments of acquaintance between the two. Obito manages to reach Naruto and Sakura to return the Fox to the boy while Kakashi is saved from Madara’s attack by Gai.

The sage gives Sasuke and Naruto some of his power so that the boys are able to seal up their mother Kaguya forever. After finishing the conversation Hagoromo gives Sasuke the power of the original Rinnegan and his Yin Power of the Six Ways, while to Naruto he gives the sage art, the Yang Power of the Six Ways, and the powers of all the seekers, being a Carrier Force himself. After returning to the world of the living he fights alongside Naruto against Madara, who has since absorbed the power of the Decacoda and the Sacred Tree. Later Madara activates the infinite Tsukuyomi, trapping the entire world in illusion, but Team 7 manages to save itself thanks to Sasuke’s Rinnegan.

Infinite Tsukuyomi Arc

Obito controlled by the Black Zetsu then attacks Madara from behind, revealing him to be actually the will of Princess Kaguya Otsutsuki, mother of the Hermit. Having completed the preparations, Madara launches the Infinite Tsukuyomi: a blazing light then spreads throughout the world and causes all living beings to fall into genjutsu; the only ones saved are the Hokage resurrected through the Impure Resurrection Technique and Team 7, protected by the Susanoo created by Sasuke’s Rinnegan. The Infinite Tsukuyomi ends its effects, and the young Uchiha releases the Susanoo that protected Naruto, Sakura, Kakashi and Sasuke himself from Madara’s powerful illusory technique; the latter then claims to have rid the world of wars and declares himself sovereign and savior of the planet, as well as claiming to have corrected Hashirama’s mistakes. Zetsu leaves Obito’s body by seizing that of Madara, who has now transformed into Kaguya Otsutsuki.

Kaguya Arc

Kaguya throws Naruto and Sasuke to the ground and initially thinks that they are Hagoromo and Hamura, her sons, but then realizes that they are Indra and Ashura, her grandsons; noticing then the symbols on their hands, she discovers that it was her son who gave them the techniques with which they are equipped. Sakura wonders who that woman is who suddenly appeared in Madara’s place while Kakashi asks Kaguya what her goal is: the goddess responds by stating that men do not know how to grasp the true meaning of chakra and its essence and that talking to them is useless, further adding that the world is her precious nursery and that she does not want to harm it further.

After stating that she wants to stop fighting, Kaguya, using her powers, summons another dimension to isolate them, having sensed the chakra of the Hokage (who might be in the way of her plans): the goddess then takes Naruto, Sasuke, Kakashi, Sakura and Obito to a dimension of lava and, after saving themselves from the magma, the first two begin their confrontation with her, who, however, proves invulnerable to all their techniques.

After being separated from Sasuke, Naruto finds himself alone fighting Kaguya. Through a copy, he explains to the others that he no longer feels Sasuke’s presence and especially that without him, sealing Kaguya would be impossible. Obito therefore devises a strategy that involves using Kamui to synchronize with the space-time portals created by the Goddess. However, he objects and adds that this would require an ill-considered amount of chakra as he would be moving through dimensions not belonging to him. Sakura, then, offers to help him. With a diversion created using dozens of copies, Naruto forces Kaguya to open a portal again to escape, so that, with Sakura and Obito (using the Kamui) he can reach the base dimension, the one that connects the other five.

Sakura and Obito disappear, making Black Zetsu believe that they have exhausted their chakra, and the latter convinces his mother to eliminate what she believes to be the real Naruto without bothering to absorb his chakra, to which end she pierces the protagonist with her Cinereous Bones, pulverizing him. Back in the frozen dimension, the Goddess finds all the copies of Naruto and realizes that the one she destroyed was only a copy. Obito and Sakura are left alone in that dimension and can undisturbed open the portals one by one and, reaching the end of their strength, manage to find and rescue Sasuke.

The Sage of Six Paths explains to the four Hokage that Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, and Kakashi are fighting in another dimension and that he needs them to perform the technique that is to bring them back when the time comes.

Naruto attacks Kaguya with nine Rasenshuriken containing the chakra of all the seekers, which attack generates instability within the alien’s body. Thus, the seekers attempt to get out by attacking Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura, with the latter being saved by Kakashi’s timely intervention thanks to his Perfect Susanoo, obtained through the Hypnotic Sharingans he possesses in both eyes at the hands of Obito’s spirit and chakra.

After attacking Kaguya with the Kamui Shuriken, the Rabbit Goddess regains control over the nine seekers thanks to the new chakra from the base dimension by way of the Infinite Tsukuyomi, after which she generates a gigantic Primary Sphere which, as explained by Black Zetsu, is the prelude to a new space-time. Kakashi states that he has a plan to seal the Goddess once and for all. Through careful teamwork that also involves Sakura, Naruto, and Sasuke, the three manage to apply the seal to Kaguya, striking her in unison.

The Fourth Great Ninja War can be considered over. The Hermit of the Six Ways receives confirmation from Naruto that what happened with his sons will not happen and that he will keep his promise to save Sasuke. Using the Susanoo as a vessel, Sasuke absorbs all of the seeker chakra reaching the same strength as the Hermit. Resuming the fight, the difference is immediately apparent as Naruto finds himself in trouble.

Valley of the End Fight

The fight moves from the land to the sky to above the clouds, here Naruto realizes that he must counterattack if he is to survive to save the Uchiha and after absorbing all the natural chakra accumulated by Kurama he throws toward Sasuke a Rasen Shuriken Titanic Six-Paths Shuriken, while Sasuke launches toward Naruto his most powerful technique, the Arrow of Indra, which ensues unleashes a very violent shockwave capable of reaching even the place of war where Kakashi and Sakura are still, bringing destruction in its path.

Naruto and Sasuke plummet to the ground exhausted. Sasuke tries to absorb more chakra from the seekers but being exhausted he has lost control of it, then the two former comrades improvise a bloody hand-to-hand duel in which neither seems to prevail over the other. When the clash seems to be heading toward parity Sasuke, with the Rinnegan, absorbs the chakra that Kurama had just finished accumulating for Naruto so he prepares to finish him off with the Thousand Hawks but Naruto, catching the weakening of the Uchiha’s Sharingan, anticipates him by flinging him away with a punch. Desperate Sasuke asks his rival why he does not want to surrender and be eliminated, and Naruto replies that he cannot die because he is his only friend.

Sasuke decides to gather his remaining forces in Kagutsuchi, while Naruto does the same with one last Rasengan: the clash between the two techniques razes the Valley of the End to the ground.

Immersed in a dream, Sasuke, believing himself to be dead along with his rival, reminisces with Naruto about the reasons why they were both removed from the village, marveling at how Naruto, even in death, still worries about the fate of the world since the Infinite Tsukuyomi has not been broken.

A few moments later, the Uchiha regains consciousness and, Naruto, lying next to him, points out that they have lost a great deal of blood and therefore could die at any moment. Sasuke again asks him why he persists in getting in the way of his plans and what it means to him to be his friend; Naruto replies that seeing a comrade prefer solitude, loading himself with all the hatred and throwing himself into darkness causes him pain. An incredulous Sasuke recalls how standing next to Naruto and the rest of Team 7 he considered them a projection of his family and how he suffered when his rival suffered in turn, comparing Naruto himself to his brother Itachi.

Suddenly, Sasuke can also see Naruto’s memories and, after realizing how he was able to convert all the people he had faced in the past and how even his brother Itachi had become convinced that Naruto was the only hope to save him, he redeemed himself. After realizing that they had fallen asleep until dawn and escaped death once again, Sasuke admits that he was defeated by acknowledging his friend’s strength.

When asked how he would act if he again tried to give in to hatred by fighting him, Naruto tells him that he, in turn, would beat him to make him open his eyes again even though, under the circumstances, he believes there is no longer a need. Sasuke, after a long time, is moved by shedding a few tears as their blood continues to flow from their amputated arms. Sakura then, accompanied by Kakashi, rejoins her companions and treats their wounds. Sasuke takes advantage of the situation to humbly ask Sakura to forgive him for all he has caused her.

Epilogue

Kakashi abdicates his role as the Sixth Hokage to allow Naruto and the future generation of Konoha to flourish. Naruto is thus finally acclaimed the Seventh Hokage of the Leaf Village. Having now become a man, Naruto leads a happy life, surrounded by all those he loves. Naruto is married to Hinata Hyuga and gives birth to two sons, Boruto and Himawari Uzumaki.

Boruto: Naruto the Movie

Naruto Uzumaki, besides being a hero and one of the most powerful ninjas in the world, has long since become the seventh Hokage of the Leaf Village, his greatest dream. Married to Hinata Hyuga, he has two sons, Boruto and Himawari. The eldest son Boruto often shows a hostile and confrontational attitude toward his father because of his job as Hokage, which forces him to spend most of his time away from home, to the point where he hates the Hokage.

At one point, Boruto participates in the Chunin Selection Examinations, which he passed without any problems in the first two rounds along with the members of his team, and manages to make it to the third round of the examination, which consists of a series of hand-to-hand knockout fights against Shikadai Nara, his friend and son of Shikamaru Nara, the Hokage’s advisor. Finding himself in trouble, Boruto cheats with the use of a technical device, given to him at the beginning of the exams by scientist Katasuke Tono, through which he reproduces many copies of his body. This induced Shikadai to surrender. Discovered by his father, Boruto is publicly disqualified under his orders.

The raid on the examination arena by the Otsutsuki Clan introduces two new faces, Momoshiki and Kinshiki Otsutsuki, whose goal is to kidnap Naruto and take the Nine-Tails Fox from his body so as to create special pills: these, with large amounts of chakra, would enable them to remain eternally young and powerful.

Forced to face them and awaken the power of his seeker, Naruto decides to sacrifice himself, shielding his body and chakra from a deadly technique of the alien duo, saving his son Boruto and all the inhabitants of the Leaf Village. Boruto is joined by Sasuke, who reports to him that he has detected through Rinnegan Naruto’s presence in a parallel dimension. The boy is urged by the master not to give himself up, just as Naruto has always done so as to save his father. In doing so, Boruto seizes the opportunity to prove his worth and, together with Sasuke and the four Kage of the other four ninja nations, prepares for the final battle.

Having all been transferred to a parallel dimension thanks to Sasuke’s Rinnegan, the ninja bring Naruto to safety at the limit of his strength and almost deprived of his seeker and engage in a confrontation with Momoshiki and Kinshiki. In trouble, Kinshiki allows himself to be eliminated by his ally, absorbing its energy and becoming much bulkier and more powerful. Having recovered, Naruto takes part in the clash, combining the power of the Nine-Tails Fox with Sasuke’s Susanoo, succeeding in taking down his opponent.

However, Katasuke and another scientist, who had secretly infiltrated the portal to the other dimension, launch a series of ninja arts at him, which instead of defeating him causes Momoshiki to resume. He finally defeated by Boruto’s Rasengan, empowered by Naruto himself. One morning a few days after the rescue, harmony has returned to the Uzumaki home with Boruto and his father Naruto now reconciled and much to the delight of his mother and little sister.

Abilities

Initially, Naruto is shown to be very deficient in the ninja arts and, as the story goes on, he will always go on to improve himself especially with the help and training done with his masters and friends; Kakashi, Jiraiya, Fukasaku and Killer Bee, even though he does not have great skills and expertise in the ninja arts like them.

Every mechanism for ninja techniques is repeatedly explained to him and the reason is that by harboring Kurama inside him, the latter’s chakra is mixed with Naruto’s in a constant struggle over chakra prevalence and this, greatly affects Naruto’s abilities. Nevertheless, in order to make full use of his potential in battle, Naruto must resort to the power of his seeker.

Naruto possesses a large amount of chakra that is said to be superior to that of the Uchiha Clan (so much so that he is able to summon a huge amount of copies with the Superior Body Multiplication Technique, something, according to Kakashi, impossible for a normal ninja), due to his membership in the Uzumaki Clan from which he inherited a great deal of life force, which being added to the power of the Fox gives him great potential.

Naruto was at first unaware of the peculiarity of his innate ability, which is precisely descended from his mother’s clan: he does not exploit this potential, wasting time inventing useless erotic techniques, but in time he engages in learning to multiply, which he does naturally well along with Rasengan.

Martial Arts

Initially, Naruto did not demonstrate great skill in martial arts. After learning the Superior Technique of Body Multiplication, Naruto develops several devastating techniques, such as Naruto Uzumaki’s Two Thousand Chained Strikes, in which he uses his copies to carry out numerous physical attacks. Naruto possesses other techniques, such as Millennial Pain, which he learned from Kakashi. By the end of the series, his martial arts skills increase enough that he is able to compete with Sasuke.

Shuriken Art

Naruto prefers to make much more use of magical arts and physical attacks in battle, however, he has demonstrated considerable skill in the use of ninja tools, especially when paired with Sasuke. Suffice it to say that the Rasenshuriken is based precisely on the shape, as the name suggests, of the shuriken. In battle, Naruto also sometimes uses kunai.

Chakra

Naruto’s real strength is the magical arts, with which he is very skilled. His fighting style is mainly based on the Superior Body Multiplication Technique and especially the Rasengan technique. Naruto will manage to develop several more powerful variants, including the Rasen Shuriken: while training with his master Kakashi, the boy discovers that he has a natural affinity for the wind-type chakra. Thus combining the shape manipulation offered by the Rasengan and the wind chakra, he creates the devastating Rasenshuriken technique.

However, every time Naruto uses it he risks his life because of the backlash. In the future, he will solve the problem with the Hermitic Mode and later the fox chakra. Naruto also knows the Recall Technique, which allows him to summon toads that support him in fighting; he is also able to summon Gamabunta, the Toad King, who initially refuses to follow his orders, but observing the boy’s fighting spirit, he agrees. During the fourth ninja war, Naruto summons Gamakichi, Gamabunta’s son, who shows up considerably grown up from the last time (namely the clash with Pain) and as strong as his father. It is assumed that he is now his main summoner. He seems to be able to use the Instant Transfer Technique, as stated by Boruto in Chapter 700.

Power and control of the Nine-Tails Fox

The Fox Kurama’s power gives Naruto several advantages, including faster than normal healing speed and, by harnessing the chakra that the Fox gives him in difficult times, much greater than average power and speed, as well as a more powerful amount of chakra. Over time, Naruto, with Jiraiya’s help, learns to control the Fox’s chakra to the point where he can develop, without losing his mind, a third tail of the Demon’s mantle.

Upon the development of the fourth tail, however, Naruto undergoes a radical transformation and loses his reason, to the point where he can no longer distinguish friend from foe. Despite being the carrying force of the Nine-Tailed Fox, Naruto, in order to avoid harming others and himself, has decided to no longer resort to the demon chakra as a resource in an emergency, relying on his own strength alone at the expense of the assiduous demands of the seeker.

Killer Bee helps Naruto control his demon by making him pass two tests:

  • First of all, Naruto is forced to face in his subconscious his dark side, which embodies all the evil thoughts that the boy suppresses. Precisely because of his evil nature, the dark Naruto is welcomed by the Nine-Tails Fox. He is not easily defeated, as this one knows all the techniques of the original, but in the end the real Naruto decides to accept his dark side as a part of himself and thanks him, as he states that without him he would not have been able to survive.
  • Secondly, Naruto faces, again in his unconscious, the Fox himself against whom he wins and manages to take over a part of his chakra, also thanks to the invaluable help of his mother.

Having passed the tests, Naruto then obtains part of the Fox chakra. When he uses it, the boy becomes covered with an orange chakra and increases as well as his strength and speed, even being almost compared to the Fourth Hokage. He so far gains greater control over some of his old techniques: he is able, for example, to throw a very small Rasen Shuriken created by a single finger and two hands of chakra sprouting from it. In addition, he is able to manipulate the Fox chakra at will, making hands out of the same chakra as well: in this way he is able to create a Rasengan even without the aid of body multiplication.

Finally, Naruto gains the ability to perceive, even at a great distance, evil presences. Nevertheless, the transformation has, at first, disadvantages: Naruto, unlike Killer Bee, could not transform into the Fox and could not share chakra with the latter, otherwise the demon could take advantage of it to suck out his chakra and kill him. But Naruto, during the war, finally succeeded in being accepted by the seeker, who gave him all his power so that he could face Tobi. Having obtained all the Fox’s power, Naruto’s appearance further changes and his appearance becomes similar to that of the Sage of the Six Paths of Transmigration. All the more, Naruto succeeds in shaping his chakra, completely reconstructing the form of his seeker in all its grandeur, just like Killer Bee.

However, the first time he assumes this form, he manages to maintain it for no more than five minutes and eight for the second, as neither Naruto nor Kurama have yet become accustomed to sharing their powers. Possessing the Yang chakra of the Fox, Naruto is able to involuntarily transform plants in the vicinity, as he possesses extraordinary life energy that has an effect even on Zetsu, whose genetic pattern is based on plants. This mode can be combined with Sage Mode to greatly enhance his abilities, giving him an additional increase in speed, stamina, durability, ninjutsu and taijutsu. The signs of Sage Mode are also reflected on Kurama’s cloak, plus by gaining full control over the powers given to him by Kurama, naruto becomes immune to the Illusory Arts.

In the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations series, during the fight against Isshiki Otsutsuki, whose goal was to reimpose Karma on Kawaki, Naruto used the Baryon Mode, a powerful ability of Kurama that allows him to consume the seeker’s chakra to achieve enough strength to overpower an Otsutsuki, at the cost, however, of the disappearance of the seeker himself, who has consumed his own chakra. The chakra of the one being struck is also gradually consumed, thus bringing the Otsutsuki to exhaustion in a very short time. After such a battle Naruto then loses Kurama’s power, but since it is not extracted from the outside, Naruto does not lose his life.

Senjutsu

Naruto learns how to “enter” Sage mode from Fukasaku, a toad who is an expert in the sage arts and who had also formerly been Jiraiya’s master, to whom he taught the same disciplines and techniques later transmitted to novice pupil Naruto. Through this transformation Naruto improves in strength, speed and reflexes, as well as possessing a kind of perception of the presences around him, nature, friend or foe alike.

This allows him to be able to predict or adjust accordingly to face enemy attacks, although this ability does not compare to the prescience offered by the sharingan, which is far superior. Naruto was still able to use it to anticipate an attack by the Third Raikage, only to have his own technique bounce back at him.

Hermitic mode allows Naruto to harness elemental chakra to increase the power of his techniques, such as the Rasenshuriken in its throwing version. While Naruto is in Sage mode, he can use natural energy as an extension of his own body and, using the Toad Style (a martial art based on the use of nature chakra), he is able to strike the enemy even without touching him, thanks to the shockwave resulting from his attacks.

Six Paths Sage Mode

During the clash with Madara Uchiha, the latter absorbed the Tailed Beasts and left Naruto in a state of coma, close to death. All the more, however, Naruto received part of the chakra of all the Tailed Beasts thanks to Obito, who managed to wrest it from the Diabolic Statue, thus saving Naruto from certain death. Since the seekers were created from the chakra of the Sage of Six Paths, Naruto, by obtaining a part of the chakra of each seeker, obtained the Hermit chakra, with which he could use the Six Ways Hermit Mode. At the same time, in his subconscious thanks to the sage chakra, he comes into contact with Hagoromo Otsutsuki, who gives him the yang part of his chakra, which manifests as a temporary seal on his right hand, which together with the yin seal received from Sasuke, will enable him to seal Kaguya, Hagoromo’s mother. At this stage, the boy has a sage-like appearance, with gudoudama behind his back. In this form, Naruto is able to combine Rasengan and Rasenshuriken with seeker abilities, creating powerful techniques, such as the Art of Fusion: Rasenshuriken or the Hermetic Art: Art of Rasengan Magnetism. He can also fly, use the Wish Sphere and regenerate or heal others, even restoring lost organs.

Creation and development

Masashi Kishimoto was eager to create a “naïve and stupid” character with a set of traits close to what he considered the ideal hero: a simple way of thinking, a mischievous side, always optimistic, thus giving him many of the characteristics of Son Goku, the main character of Akira Toriyama’s manga and anime, Dragon Ball.

Kishimoto however, to differentiate Naruto, added a dark past to make him unique. The initial sketches were changed several times by the author, providing the character with different outfits to make him more appealing to Western audiences, as well as easier to draw and color.

Naruto’s personality is, on the whole, childlike in nature; Kishimoto often tries to highlight this characteristic, such as on the cover of volume 10 of the manga, where there is a depiction of Naruto imitating a turtle as a child would. Naruto’s clothes are based on the clothing Kishimoto wore when he was younger: in his opinion, using a pre-existing design would not make Naruto unique while something original would make him stand out too much.

The orange color of his outfit is used to make Naruto “popular,” with blue often used to complement the orange. Because the name Naruto is associated with spirals, these are often recalled on his costumes. In the initial sketches, Naruto wore boots, but Kishimoto replaced them with sandals because he liked to draw toes. The glasses Naruto wore were also replaced with a brow cover, because it took too long to draw them. In addition, he commented that he would like to apologize to the staff of the animated realization of Naruto, believing it was too difficult to do.

Kishimoto stated that he is happy that his character has blond hair and blue eyes. The editor of Shonen Jump in the United States suggested those features so as to bring the character closer to Western audiences. Kishimoto said that he identifies with Naruto more than with any of the other characters in the manga. When asked why Naruto’s favorite food was ramen instead of Udon, Kishimoto simply explained that he personally has always enjoyed eating ramen.

In Naruto: Clash of Ninja, a video game series, Naruto is playable in various stages of the manifestation of the Nine-Tailed Fox, characterized by a red-colored chakra. Kishimoto took a cue from these stages, drawing one for the cover of volume 26 of the manga. While making Naruto for the second part of the manga, Kishimoto made some changes to his appearance, in particular, making the brow cover wider to simplify the shape of his eyelashes so that they would be easier to draw since they had dried him out in the previous version.

He also noted that Naruto’s pants as they were gave a childlike appearance to the character. To remedy this, Kishimoto redesigned a folded portion of Naruto’s pants, giving the character a more mature look. In the original Japanese version, Naruto often ends his sentences with the reinforcer -ttebayo (which achieves an effect similar to ending a sentence with “you know”).

Kishimoto wanted to give a repetitive child phrase, and dattebayo he felt was the most appropriate one for Naruto. The author believes that the phrase complements the character, and serves as a verbal tic that portrays him as a bit of a brat. During the beginning of the dubbing of the English version, dattebayo and -ttebayo were replaced with the English phrase believe it!, so as to facilitate lip synchronization with the character. In the Italian version, on the other hand, the “dattebayo” was not translated, simply an attempt was made with the adaptation to complete the lyrics, so as to synchronize the speech with that of the original version.
